The report about the latest number of the users of the app had first surfaced on Fast Company. We should mention that the photo application is the ninth service by Google to achieve this milestone. Other services by the technology giant that have already achieved this number include Android, YouTube, Gmail, Google Search and Google Maps. But then, what makes it different is the fact that Google Photos took lesser time to hit the mile stone as compared to others. Google Photos has been enjoying a lot of popularity since its inception. Five months after it was launched at Google I/O 2015, the app had reported to cross over 100 million users. It did not stop there. Google Photos even hit the 500 million user mark just after two years of its launch. While Google Photos is one among the apps that are included in most Android smartphones as a part of the suite of apps by the technology giant. However, this nowhere guaranteed its success. We should also point out that Google Photos was initially spinoff from Google+, which was a not-so-successful attempt by the company to compete with social media giant Facebook. According to Fast Company, after becoming a separate app, Google Photos offered some of the best underlying technology of the social media platform by Google and it was preferred by users because it did not have the less popular features of Google+.
But the company does not wish to stop even here with the popular app. To achieve the 2 billion user mark, Google has today launched Gallery Go, which is basically a lightweight alternative to the main app that has become so indispensable for the users. Speaking about Gallery Go, Anil Sabharwal, the Google VP who had led the creation of Google Photos, told Fast Company, “We’ve crossed this really critical milestone of a billion monthly users, and Gallery Go is how we think about the next billion.” Which feature of Google Photos can you not live without?
